Single Mothers¡¯ Community Participation Experience

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to understand the essence of single mothers` community participation experience. 11 single mothers, who participate in various community programs, have been interviewed. Data has been qualitatively analyzed in terms of the process of adaptation and changes in their life participating of the community and the issues from their experiences. From the study 8 themes, ``threw out alone into the world; shutting down and keeping a distance from the world``, ``crawling out to the world to get rid of poverty; connection with community``, ``facing the unfamiliar and unfriendly; changing mind``, ``becoming a new family member among another ¡°me¡±s; the genesis of a quasi-family community``, ``in and out due to the desperate living situation: shaking community from uneasy daily living``, ``unable to ignore: keeping fidelity to the community``, ``precious me; qualitative transformation of the existence, extended self``, ``us to share: reciprocity to community and society`` have revealed. Based on those results the practical and political implications discussed.
